Rustic Charm from Projects Using Cedar Fence Pickets
There’s something truly satisfying about turning simple cedar fence pickets into handcrafted treasures. At Bubba’s Workshop, I take pride in using these budget-friendly boards to create beautiful, rustic projects that bring charm to any backyard, porch, or garden.
Why Cedar Fence Pickets?
Cedar is naturally weather-resistant, lightweight, and full of character with its warm tones and distinct grain. And best of all, it’s affordable—making it perfect for outdoor DIY projects that don’t break the bank.
🌼 Popular Cedar Fence Picket Projects I Make
🌸 1. Flower Planters
Whether mounted to a fence or sitting on a railing, these small rectangular planters are a great way to add color to your outdoor space. I cut the pickets down to size, screw them together, and drill a few drainage holes in the bottom. A quick sanding and a clear sealant are all it takes to make them last through the seasons.
🐦 2. Birdhouses
Using just a few pickets, I craft simple, functional birdhouses with classic pitched roofs. I drill a 1 1/4” entrance hole, add a little perch, and finish them off with a cedar shingle roof. These little homes are a hit with bluebirds, wrens, and chickadees around here.
🪺 3. Bird Feeders
The open-frame style feeders I build hang easily from a shepherd’s hook or tree branch. I cut precise openings and assemble the frame using wood glue and brads. The natural cedar helps keep moisture down, and the birds love it!
🍽️ 4. Outdoor Tables and Benches
By combining multiple pickets and adding sturdy support legs made from 2x4s, I’ve created some compact outdoor coffee tables and garden benches. They’re ideal for patios or firepit areas. I leave the wood unfinished for a rustic weathered look, or seal it for extra durability.
Every project begins right in my garage, with a pile of cedar pickets and a bit of imagination. There’s something rewarding about turning a basic fence board into something useful and beautiful for the home.
