Bubba’s Rustic Indoor Signs

At Bubba’s Workshop, one of my favorite simple-but-satisfying projects is making rustic indoor signs using pre-laminated wood panels. These panels are smooth, affordable, and ready for painting or engraving—which makes them perfect for custom home décor, especially for those funny or heartfelt signs you see in bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways.

🪵 Why Pre-Laminated Panels?

Pre-laminated panels are a great option for indoor signs because:

  • They’re smooth and ready to finish
  • Consistent in size and thickness
  • Affordable and easy to cut
  • Accept paint, stain, or vinyl lettering with ease

You can find them at most home improvement stores in various sizes—usually already sanded and glued up.

🛠️ How I Make My Rustic Indoor Signs

✂️ Step 1: Cut to Size

I start by cutting the panels down to common sign sizes like 6×12″, 8×16″, or even larger if needed. I like keeping the proportions natural so they look good hanging or standing on a shelf.

🧱 Step 2: Add a Rustic Touch

To give that farmhouse-style charm, I distress the edges lightly with sandpaper or a rasp, and sometimes tap the surface with a chain or hammer for added character. A dark stain or light wash of paint gives it that weathered, vintage look.

🖋️ Step 3: Add the Message

This is where the sign comes to life. Depending on the design, I use:

  • Vinyl lettering (cut with my Cricut)
  • Painted stencils
  • CNC-carved text for a more permanent, engraved look

Popular sayings include:

  • “Wash Your Hands – Ya Filthy Animal”
  • “Changing the Toilet Paper won’t Kill you”
  • “Sprinkles are for Cupcakes not Toilet Seats”
  • “ALEXA, Clean the Bathroom!”
  • “Live Laugh Love”
  • “Have a Nice Poop”

🔨 Step 4: Hang It Up

Each sign gets a sawtooth hanger or jute rope, depending on the vibe. I also make small tabletop signs that lean or stand with a wooden easel.

🏠 Perfect for Every Room

These signs aren’t just for bathrooms! I’ve made custom ones for laundry rooms, kitchens, living spaces, and even nurseries. They make great gifts, too—personal, handmade, and full of charm.

Whether you’re looking to sell at craft fairs or just want to add some personality to your own home, pre-laminated panels are a great starting point for rustic sign making.
